Shorebird Sanctuary. Bolivar
Flats has been recognized by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve
Network as an important resting and feeding location for migrating
shorebirds from throughout the Western Hemisphere. At first glance, you
may not see the special qualities of the Flats, a unique area combining
salt marsh, mud flats and beach, each habitat quite different from the

High Island Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary; Louis B. Smith Boy Scout Woods and Eubanks Woods Bird Sanctuary. The woods of High Island have undoubtedly been an important stopping point for migratory birds for thousands of years and birdwatchers since the 1940's. Smith Oaks is 143 acres which contain oak mottes, with 100+ year old live oaks, woods, wetlands, ponds and coastal prairie. Named for George and Charlotte Smith. Louis Smith Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary is 48 acres of hackberry/oak motte, coastal prairie and wetlands one mile from the Gulf of Mexico in High Island. Named for Louis B. Smith who purchased the woods from Amoco Production Company. Eubanks Woods Bird Sanctuary is 9.5 acres of woods and wetlands in High Island. Named in honor of Ted Eubanks, past president Houston Audubon who was instrumental in starting Houston Audubon Society's High Island sanctuary system. |
